The Walker Memorial Library’s Local History Collection provides users, interested in researching Westbrook and surrounding communities, access to historical documents and assorted archival materials. Due to the age and fragile nature of these materials, the library relies a great deal on photocopied duplicates. This allows patrons to browse through the materials at their leisure and allows the library to maintain the preservation quality of very old and brittle items.
The Local History Collection houses regional town histories as well as vital records from across Maine; indexed Westbrook-related scrapbooks that contain news articles from the 1890s to the 1950s; archived city directories beginning in 1885; Westbrook High School yearbooks from 1904 to the present; and archived Westbrook-related photographs. In 1992, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provided Walker Memorial Library with microfilmed copies of 175 books and 10,000 index card records. Among these records are burial cards from all of Westbrook’s public cemeteries. On microfilm, the Local History Collection maintains federal census records, early 20th century newspapers, and the Westbrook American/American Journal from 1951 to the present.
We look forward to helping patrons of all ages use this great community resource. For more information, please call (207) 854-0630 ext. 4257.
